The New Google Feature Every Traveller Should Know About

The last google update is perfect for travellers who want to discover more from a city than just what the travel book says. This new feature makes exploring a new city incredibly easy and it is so mysterious from the public, most people don’t even realize it’s there.

Have you ever noticed orange areas around certain streets in Google Maps? Yup….it is this what we are talking about. These areas of interest are determined algorithmically, using a computerised process to pick out areas with the most stores, restaurants, or bars, but Google says it’s also using a “human touch” in high-density areas to point people to the coolest locations. The feature is great for letting you see a place without a lot of planning.

The updated Google Maps has erased road outlines and changed typography, alterations that Google says make it easier for users to see traffic information and make out points of interest, train stations, and other key places easily.

The orange areas are particularly useful on pointing us to smaller city attractions we would have missed, like statues, churches, plazas and other times, it can take you to shops and bars that were occupied by people who lived nearby.

Google says: “We determine “areas of interest” with an algorithmic process that allows us to highlight the areas with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars and shops. In high-density areas like NYC, we use a human touch to make sure we’re showing the most active areas.”
